Sunday Stroll

Today we took a long walk to find the Smolny Campus where hopefully I (Josh) will start language training next week, the campus is pictured below, quite pretty. It took us exactly 57 minutes to get there, so for those of you who are keeping track that is a 2 hour walking commute a day. I still think it is feasible and will keep me in some sort of shape, especially in light of the culinary delights we have found. (see "so we won't starve" entries below) . However today it was cold, maybe 20 degrees, but I am sure it gets much colder here. So we shall see if I stick to my healthy walking commute ideas. Here is a picture of a pretty building on our walk, we are amazed at how on one street their can be gorgeous building like this next to some of the most degraded buildings we have ever seen.
Here is a picture of a tower on the wall of the Smolny campus, it is in a mild state of disrepair, but is similar to many things we see in the city, things that are very beautiful but not very kept up.

And our new challenge for the day is our first load of laundry, the washer and dryer are combined in one machine, it seems similar to the one I had in Germany, stay tuned tomorrow for how they turned out. I hope it will be fine.

Josh and Nikki -- We are loving all these updates. It looks like you guys are exploring and finding tons of yummy food! The pizza looked great! So, who is winning the cold war? We've had -14 lately. My classroom door was frozen shut. It took us over an hour to get in! Josh, hope your first classes go well!

Hi Josh and Nikki!
It's so much fun to see/experience Russia through your eyes and adventures. Glad you're keeping a blog--this is interesting, unusual stuff...it would make a great book! The pepperoni pizza made my mouth water, the seafood one made me hasten to the john! tee hee Stay warm and enjoy your time...it's really wonderful you both can have such an experience! Love, young aunt Dee

Young Aunt Dee, we consider ourselves lucky to get this experience. It is a truly beautiful city and country...
Beth and Robert- It appears our 10 degrees of latitude furhter north we have on Maine and Wisconsin isn't making us any colder, in fact we have averaged 20 degrees warmer than Wisconsin this week, however we haven't gone above freezing (farenheit) yet.
