To the Burbs, Peterburg style

Recently we took a walking tour to the suburbs of St Petersburg, in Russian known as the sleeping regions as we would think of residential neighborhoods. This specific one houses about 500,000 people, making it a city onto itself. Below are pictures of the residential buildings, the oldest ones dating back to the 50's-60's and unofficially named after Nikita Khrushchev as he authorized the mass building of these 30 year "temporary" housing structures. You can see one of these 5 story Khrushchevkas through the trees behind the lake.In other parts of the residential area are much newer and modern buildings, spread out amongst green areas and health clinics and schools.Of course all the kids have places to play in the urban jungle.
Here is a very soviet looking building, almost all of these apartments have balconies, must have been quite a sought after residence.
The apartment buildings stretch on for what looks like miles.

Of course, somethings in the St Petersburg suburbs are very much like the American Suburbs..Here is the foundation of a concrete Pill Box from the defense lines built to protect the city during the Seige of Leningrad, many of these still exist as monuments in the city.
Here we are under the watchful eye of Lenin himslef pointing the way to the future.
